Est. June 2018

Overview & History

Strikers (originally CryptoStrikers), the first sports NFT project on Ethereum, was founded by Gianni Settino and Benn Gurton and launched online at cryptostrikers.com on June 11, 2018 (original announcement). The project was set up as a game, with the objective to collect all 132 player cards issued across two different sets - Originals and Iconics.

The cards, representing players participating in the 2018 World Cup, were available for purchase through July 15, 2018. Users had the option to purchase two different packs, each containing 4 player cards - Standard packs (at 0.025 ETH) contained only Originals, while Premium packs (at 0.05 ETH) contained Originals and randomly assigned Iconics.

CryptoStrikers Standard and Premium card packs

The Originals set consists of 100 cards (Checklist IDs 0–99) featuring artwork from Mau Toscano. The Iconics set consists of 32 cards (Checklist IDs 100–131) featuring artwork from Gilang Bogy. Ultimately a total of 10,261 cards were issued, with an estimated 4,500 cards currently lost or unwrapped (see tracker). The last Strikers cards were created in 2018, and no more can or will ever be created.

During the knockout stages of the 2018 tournament, users could make predictions on player performance by staking cards during matches. If the player from a staked card scored a goal or kept a clean sheet, the card was upgraded with a star. 27 cards were upgraded with stars, with one card receiving multiple stars.

The CryptoStrikers project - including the trademark, brand name, and website - was sold in November 2018 to an undisclosed private company that ultimately decided not to continue the project. As a result, Strikers is a historical project: there are no plans for future mints or additional card sets.

FAQ

What is CryptoStrikers?

CryptoStrikers is the first sports NFT project on Ethereum, launched in June 2018, with card sales running for the duration of the 2018 World Cup. For background and history, read this deep dive.

Note that the project is not active - the company (including the original website domain and Twitter account) was sold in November 2018 by its founders. There are no plans to relaunch the project for any future tournament.

What are "Wrapped Strikers"? Why do I need to wrap my 2018 cards, and how?

The CryptoStrikers contract used an early, incomplete OpenZeppelin implementation of ERC-721 (for the nerds: ERC-165's supportsInterface() was missing). This makes the original cards incompatible with some newer NFT protocols. When you wrap, you get a new ERC-721 token that works everywhere - and you can unwrap at any time.

Modern platforms like OpenSea need Strikers in this new format to allow trading. It is purely a compatibility tool; nothing about the card you own changes, and there is no difference in value between a wrapped and unwrapped card.

Cards can be wrapped at strikers.auction - connect your wallet, approve the initial transaction, then wrap individual cards. Gas fees apply to each transaction.

Where can I buy a CryptoStrikers NFT?

All 10,261 tokens were minted in 2018. They can be found on secondary markets such as OpenSea and other marketplaces.

Why does OpenSea show new Strikers being minted?

All Strikers cards were minted in 2018; there is no way to make more of the original cards. What OpenSea is showing is old cards getting wrapped.

How do I transfer cards?

You can use any wallet that supports ERC-721 to transfer Strikers cards. The easiest method is to view the card on OpenSea and use the Transfer icon.

How many cards were minted, and what's the distribution?

The complete checklist - every card, tier, and supply - lives right here on the site. For live wrapped/unwrapped counts, see the tracker.

Will all 10,261 cards eventually be wrapped?

It's unclear how many of the original 10,261 cards will be recovered and wrapped. You can see a running tally on the tracker.

Are these cards officially licensed collectibles?

This disclaimer appeared on the CryptoStrikers website in 2018:

CryptoStrikers is NOT licensed by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) nor the Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels (FIFPro).

When will OpenSea issue a blue checkmark for the collection?

It is not likely that OpenSea will certify the collection, due to the licensing status outlined above.

What are the royalties on card sales?

There are no royalties. Royalties were never set by the founders, and this will not change.
